 What’s better than a summer cookout? A cookout with a really good barbecue sauce. Enter your barbecue sauce recipe in The Great Carolinas Barbecue Sauce Contest, sponsored by the Charlotte Observer and Raleigh News & Observer. Grand prize: $100 and bragging rights.

How does it work?
Submit your barbecue sauce recipe. Recipes must be for finishing sauces, such as dipping sauces and glazes. Marinades, dry rubs and mops are not eligible. Staff members of The Observer and the News & Observer will choose 10 semi-finalists from among the submissions, and then the voting phase begins. Then newspaper staff members will test the three recipes that get the most votes and choose the winner.
Who can enter?
The contest is open to residents of North or South Carolina who are at least 18 years old. Makers of commercially sold sauces are not eligible.
What kind of recipe can I enter?
Recipes must include standard measurements (cups, teaspoons, tablespoons and ounces) and be made with home kitchen equipment. If the recipe includes a commercial sauce, you must specify the brand and make at least five additons to it. Sauces may not include more than 12 ingredients, not counting salt and pepper.
Deadlines?
Submit recipes until 5 p.m. April 27. Food editors will select 10 finalist recipes from readers’ submissions, and we’ll put those 10 up for a popular vote through midnight May 9. The top three vote-getters will then be tested and tasted by the food editors, who will choose the grand prize winner.
The winner will be announced May 23.
Note: One vote per day will be allowed.
